Located in the heart of South Shields, adjacent to the Market Square, The Word includes a public library, exhibition and retail space, flexible community/meeting rooms, café and roof top restaurant with views over the River Tyne. The works also comprised the refurbishment of the Market Square and surrounding public realm as well as new car parking and highway alterations.
The ground floor is highly transparent, allowing views in and out which communicate the building’s changing activities to the town centre, while the library and other facilities are distributed over three floors to suit the programme and function of the different spaces.
The project achieved BREEAM Excellent and has won numerous awards, including two BCI Awards for Project of the Year and Social Infrastructure Project of the Year and the RICS North East Awards for Building of the Year and Community Benefit.
