Project Delivery: Gridserves First eHGV Charging Site

GRIDSERVE’s first electric HGV charging site completes and we’re proud to have been a key part of the project delivery team behind it.
Acting as Cost Consultants and Contract Administrators, our team has worked closely with GRIDSERVE to help realise their vision for a national Electric Freightway.
Located at the Nissan manufacturing plant in Sunderland, the newly opened ‘Charge Yard’ is now the UK’s largest private shared eHGV charging facility, designed specifically for the demands of modern logistics. It includes:
-
Ten high-power charging bays (up to 360kW), supporting simultaneous charging of ten trucks
-
Dedicated drive-through and tractor-only bays for operational flexibility
-
Shared access for multiple freight partners, enabling scalable electric logistics
The site will support a fleet of 25 fully electric Volvo and DAF HGVs, delivering over 2.4 million kilometres of zero-emission freight travel each year and saving an estimated 1,500 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
This project brings together leading operators including Nissan, Fergusons Transport, Yusen Logistics, and BCA UK, as part of the Electric Freightway consortium. Backed by UK Government funding through the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator programme, and supported by data partner Hitachi ZeroCarbon, the scheme sets a new standard for commercial freight infrastructure.
We’re proud to have helped deliver this complex, multi-stakeholder project — providing expert cost and contract management to ensure it was completed to the highest standard. It stands as a benchmark for future eHGV infrastructure and a compelling model for fleet operators ready to accelerate their decarbonisation plans.
